After years of anticipation and hype, the first Chevrolet Volts have left the factory and will begin arriving at dealerships shortly.

While a full roll out won't happen until early next year, the first 350 vehicles have been shipped to dealers in California, Texas, Washington D.C. and New York.

According to Tony DiSalle, Volt marketing director, "Today is a historic milestone for Chevrolet. We have redefined automotive transportation with the Volt, and soon the first customers will be able to experience gas-free commuting with the freedom to take an extended trip whenever or wherever they want."

In related news, the first retail Volt has been auctioned off for $225,000. GM hasn't released the name of the winning bidder, but the proceeds will be donated to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation to support math and science education.
