VW Golf blue-e-motion comes with a range of 93 miles (150 km) which VW hopes will be higher by the time it launches in 2014.

VW will be offering journalist at the Los Angeles auto show this week the chance to drive its upcoming Golf blue-e-motion - the all-electric variant of the Golf model due for launch in 2014.

The German automaker states the Golf blue-e-motion's range as 93 miles (150 km) but hopes to make that number higher by the time the model goes into production in 2013. With electric cars, range varies wildly and depends greatly on driving style and how power-draining devices such as the heater and air-conditioner are used.

Journalists, for the first time, though, will get a chance themselves to see how the car performs in real-world conditions.

The blue-e-motion is a 5-door, front-wheel drive variant of the Golf that comes with a 85 kW/115 PS electric motor producing a maximum torque of 270 Nm. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint takes 11.8 seconds and top speed is 135 km/h (84 mph).
