With Mercury officially dead, Lincoln has the daunting task of becoming relevant for the first time in decades.

While this is no easy task, recent rumors suggest the brand could be getting get a new entry-level crossover to slot beneath the MKX. Details are limited, but the Courier-Journal is quoting unidentified sources who are saying the crossover will be built at the Louisville assembly plant in Kentucky.

It remains unclear what will form the basis for the new crossover, but it appears to be something Kuga-inspired. Nothing is official at this point, but Ford's long-in-tooth Escape is headed for the automotive graveyard so it seems logical that a new crossover, based on the 2012 Focus, is just around the corner.

An announcement is expected later this year, but production is likely a year or two off.
