The new-for-2019 Ram 1500 launched in January at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The handsome new look won accolades, but the changes don't come without a price and Ram as officially released that info. The new pickup will start at $31,695, but a $1,645 destination fee raises the cost-of-entry to $33,340.
At that price you’ll get you a two-wheel drive Tradesman Quad Cab with the 3.6-liter V6 eTorque mild hybrid powertrain. There’s a catch, however – Ram says the V6 is a “late availability” selection, meaning if you want one of the pickups currently en route to dealers, you’ll need another $1,195 for the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, but if you want to add the eTorque setup to the Hemi it’ll cost another $1,995.

If this also sounds a bit higher than the previous-generation truck, you’re not wrong. The 2018 Ram 1500 currently on dealer lots starts at $27,095 with a $1,395 destination charge, for a grand total of $28,490. That’s a difference of $4,850, which isn’t small to say the very least. It should be noted that the 2018 Ram is quoted as a standard cab whereas the 2019 is listed as starting with a Quad Cab. Bumping the older model to the bigger cab brings the price differential closer together, but the difference still equates to around $2,000.
Chevrolet hasn’t yet announced pricing for its new 2019 Silverado, but 2018 models start at $28,285. Ford doesn’t have a new F-150 for the next model year, so numbers probably won’t increase much from the current $27,705 base price. Neither figures include destination charges.
It would seem that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is placing a pretty heavy bet that the truck market in the United States will remain strong, especially for its Ram brand. While sedan sales took a nose dive for most automakers in 2017, truck sales generally remained in the black. We say generally because Chevrolet suffered a few months of declining sales with the Silverado, which was enough for Ram to actually supplant the Bow Tie in the rankings to hold the number two pickup spot for awhile.
Only time will tell us how the market responds to the new Ram’s new style – and higher price tag.
