New details have emerged about two Toyota prototypes equipped with EV powertrains from Tesla Motors.
According to Bloomberg, the mystery vehicles are the Toyota RAV4 and the Lexus RX. These seem like logical choices considering they can easily accommodate the massive lithium-ion battery packs. More importantly, an electric RX would be a natural companion to the popular RX hybrid.
When asked for comment, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk stated "We anticipate range and acceleration exceeding that of other announced electric vehicles of this class." While vague, we can assume Musk is referring to the small / midsize crossover segment where both the RAV4 and RX compete.
During a press conference last week, Toyota's Executive Vice President, Shinichi Sasaki, said the company wants to see if there is an advantage to using thousands of laptop-size lithium-ion batteries or just a few large batteries. As you may recall, the Tesla Roadster uses the former strategy while vehicles like the Nissan Leaf adopt the latter.
