BMW has released a slew of information about the 2013 Megacity electric vehicle. Learn more about the high-tech ZEV inside.
BMW released the first teaser images of the 2013 Megacity.
Set to become one of the most innovative vehicles on the market, the Megacity boasts a futuristic design and a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) body. While several photos seem to suggest the Megacity will feature rear-hinged suicide doors, like the Rolls Royce Phantom / Ghost, the car will be a two-door coupe. It will measure approximately 157 inches (4 meters) long and offer seating for four.
The Megacity will have rear-wheel drive and a 150 hp (112 kW / 152 PS) electric motor which is powered a 35 kWh lithium-ion battery. BMW estimates the car will have a range of at least 100 miles (161 km) and a top speed of 95 mph (153 km/h).
Eventually, the company will introduce additional Megacity variants. The second model, dubbed ICV (Intracity Vehicle), will be launched in 2015. It will retain the two-door layout, but drop the rear seats. In 2017, BMW will unveil the UCV (Urban Commuter Vehicle) which features an extended wheelbase, four doors, and seating for five.
According to Martin Arlt, head of Project i, "In the future, leadership in the premium segment will belong to whichever manufacturer builds its products in the most efficient and resource-friendly way - and offers its customers the most advanced and exciting solutions for eco-friendly personal mobility. The BMW Group will continue this pioneering role in the future too."
