Volvo Trucks (a separate company from Volvo Cars) says its Volvo Concept Truck 2020 is closer to reality than one may expect.

"...our vision for the future is not that far away. Much of the technology in the Volvo Concept Truck 2020 is already available," says Volvo Trucks design director Rikard Orell.

The Volvo Concept Truck 2020 is a project by the Swedish truck-maker for a more environment- and road-friendly transporter. The truck features new technologies and an aerodynamic design to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

One of those new technologies will be an auto-pilot system, operated via a wireless connection, that can take a convoy of trucks across the European continent at speeds of around 90 km/h (56 mph), forming a road-train that will make truck traffic far more efficient on Europe's already crowded highways.

The Concept Truck 2020 also features rear-view cameras that project an image onto the inside of the windscreen, LED headlamps and indicators, and collision protection panels on the truck's nose. The instrument panel on the dashboard is an advanced touchpad screen (like an iPhone) providing the right information to the driver.

As for comfort on those long hauls, the driver has the benefit of a fouton sofa in the berth behind the front seats which folds out into a bed to sleep in at night.
