We have details and photos of the next Daytona 500 pace car, the 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

The 2011 Ford Mustang GT has been named the new Daytona 500 pace car.  It is the first Ford vehicle to lead the Daytona pack since the Ford Torino GT 40 years ago.

As part of the announcement, the manufacturer plans to build a limited edition Mustang GT replicating the car being used in Daytona.  The special edition will be limited to 50 units, with the actual pace car being auctioned off in advance of the race at Barrett-Jackson.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

"Having the opportunity to pace America's biggest auto race with a Ford icon like the 2011 Mustang GT is truly an honor," said Ford Motorsports exec Jamie Allison.

For the NASCAR season-opener, the Mustang GT will be painted in Race Red and adorned with a glass roof, and custom painted wheels.  Other features on the pace car includes a strut tower brace, mufflers, and new interior touches.
