The high-performance rubber for the 19-inch wheels is exclusive to the i30 N aka "corner rascal."

Hyundai’s first true performance car is finally here to take on the likes of Golf GTI and Focus ST by being more than just an i30 on steroids. The “everyday sports car” sits on a specification of the Pirelli P Zero UHP (Ultra High Performance) summer tires that no other car in the world has. The reason for that is because Hyundai and Pirelli have teamed up to create a tailor-made set of rubbers for the hot hatchback’s 19-inch alloy wheels.

Marked with the “HN” logo on the sidewall to reflect it’s a bespoke product for the Hyundai i30 N, the 235/35 R19 tire belongs to Pirelli’s “Perfect Fit” portfolio of individual tires created for specific applications. According to Hyundai, this P Zero rubber made by Pirelli at its factory in Italy “has been specially geared to the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics.”

In its highest state of tune, the i30 N offers a healthy 271 horsepower and 260 pound-feet (353 Newton-meters)), with an overboost function that temporarily boosts torque to 279 lb-ft (378 Nm). Its turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine grants the compact performance hatch with a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) sprint in 6.1 seconds and a respectable top speed of 155 mph (250 kph).

More than 6,213 miles (10,000 kilometers) worth of Nürburgring tests were necessary to fine-tune the i30 N to make sure it would be up to the challenge of rivaling the more established names in the segment, including the 308 GTi. The top-spec Performance version not only has the beefier setup of the engine, but it also brings along an electronically controlled limited slip differential making it more agile around the corners by reducing wheel slip and understeer. It should also sound better as Hyundai will throw in a variable exhaust valve system alternating the raspy noise depending on the chosen driving mode.

The i30 N is a taste of what’s to come in terms of N-branded models are more are en route, including what spy shots have shown to be a Veloster N based on the next-generation model.

Milan, 6 October, 2017 – Pirelli, the premium tire manufacturer, has engineered a tailor-made version of its P Zero tire for the new Hyundai i30 N. This new OE tire has been specially geared to the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics. Produced at Pirelli’s high-technology plant in Settimo Torinese, Italy, it is a unique variant of Pirelli’s P Zero UHP summer tire with the dimension of 235/35 R19.

This tailor-made P Zero tire has been marked with ‘HN’ on the tire’s sidewall by Hyundai Performance N to denote its OE fitment for the i30 N. This recent collaboration between Pirelli and Hyundai Performance N exemplifies Pirelli's ‘Perfect Fit’ strategy, where Pirelli engineers develop individual tires for each car manufacturer that specifically complements and enhances a particular car’s technical requirements and characteristics. Pirelli’s ‘Perfect Fit’ strategy has made it a worldwide market leader in original equipment tires, especially in the premium and prestige market segments. Pirelli has expanded its impressive portfolio once again through joining forces with Hyundai Performance N, another renowned automotive manufacturer.

The i30 N is Hyundai Motor’s first high-performance car under the N line up. Built on the New Generation i30, the i30 N has been developed to deliver maximum driving pleasure in everyday life on the road and maximum performance on the track.

The i30 N is Hyundai Motor’s answer to increasing customer demand for innovative, technology-driven performance. Due to launch across Europe by the end of 2017, the All-New i30 N was designed to be a performance car with a sporty dynamic for drivers.

The i30 N’s core theme is ‘Fun to Drive’ and it aims to fulfill three concepts as part of this central idea – including being a ‘Corner Rascal’, ‘Everyday Sports car’ and with a proven ‘Racetrack Capability’:

  • Corner Rascal: The i30 N loves corners. The N logo symbolizes a chicane, the ultimate part of the track where the i30 N achieves maximum traction, precision and feeling. The powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers up to 275 PS and 353 Nm torque (378 Nm with the Overboost function);
  • Everyday Sports Car: As an everyday sports car, the i30 N is suitable for daily commuting in comfort on the weekdays, or for race track performance on the weekend;
  • Racetrack capability: Durability and racetrack performance were key priorities in the i30 N vehicle’s development, which was achieved through rigorous testing on the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring circuit (with over 6213 miles recorded in testing).

The car’s versatility demands the highest performance and safety standards from a tire in all road conditions. Therefore, Pirelli engineers developed an individual edition of the P Zero tire to meet the requirements of the new i30 N.
