Its closest competitor will be the BMW X5 xDrive40e.
We are only a few weeks away from the official reveal of the Range Rover Plug-In Hybrid based on Jaguar Land Rover’s CEO Ralf Speth announcement about bringing the electrified SUV to the market before the end of the year. It could actually debut sooner than that taking into account sources close to British magazine Autocar believe the more eco-friendly Rangie will be unveiled in a matter of days.
There are plenty of spy shots with prototypes of the partially electrified Range Rover showing some mild cosmetic changes will be implemented. Both front and rear bumpers are going to receive a nip and tuck, along with slightly modified graphics for the headlights and taillights. The cabin could also go through some updates, although nothing of great importance.
But as the saying goes, it’s what’s inside that matters.
Land Rover’s answer to the BMW X5 xDrive40e is expected to use a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline unit estimated to deliver 295 horsepower and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. The combustion engine will work together with an electric motor providing 201 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm). This plug-in hybrid setup will also encompass a lithium-ion battery pack mounted underneath the trunk’s floor to enable the SUV to cover approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) while running solely on electric power. The zero-emissions range is not exactly stellar, but at least it’s higher than the BMW’s 14 miles (22.5 km) based on EPA testing.
We know for a fact both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will receive the plug-in hybrid treatment as this was the promise made by JLR’s head honcho during last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. In addition, spy photographers have already managed to grab on camera the hybridized Range Rover Sport.
It remains to be seen whether both of them will be revealed concomitantly or Land Rover will decide to wait a little bit and show the Sport version sometime in 2018.
