Rock fans prepare your wallets and bank accounts as the auction house says it could fetch close to $300,000.
Featured in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, one of the best-selling video games of all time, “Turbo Lover” is a hit song released by Judas Priest back in 1986. Heavy metal aficionados know there’s an interesting story behind this song as a 1985 Porsche 911 Turbo SE of the 930 generation served as the primary source of inspiration. Now, the car is heading to the auction block after being in the hands of legendary rock star Glenn Tipton all these years.
“We had a tour of the factory at Stuttgart and I was so impressed with the engineering and how meticulous they were when building cars, and I just had to have one. But I live out in the sticks, and it has to be nice weather to take the Porsche out, so I hardly ever use it. It’s time for it to go to someone who will get some use of it, but it’s going to be very hard to let it go.”
While the band was on tour in 1985, Judas Priest’s lead guitarist stopped by Stuttgart to take delivery of his right-hand-drive 911, which he specified with a lovely Chiffon White exterior. Being an SE model, it means the Nine Eleven comes equipped with the vented rear wheel arches and beefier side sills, while on the inside it has a white soft leather upholstery to match the body.
Tipton took great care of his prized possession and only drove it for about 14,130 miles (22,740 kilometers), hence why it’s in a great condition even after more than 30 years since it rolled off the assembly line. The turbocharged 3.3-liter air-cooled engine pumping out 300 horsepower back in the day has recently received new injectors as part of a complete service to get the car ready for the auction.
Silverstone Auctions will have the 911 Turbo SE up for grabs during its Porsche Sale set for October 21st at The Wing, Silverstone. According to the estimation made by the auction house, Tipton’s car could fetch anywhere between £180,000 and £220,000 ($241,000 and $295,000).

FOR TURBO LOVERS EVERYWHERE, JUDAS PRIEST 911 TURBO SE GOES UP FOR AUCTION AT PORSCHE SALE
- Owned by legendary rock star Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest, the 1985 Porsche 911 Turbo SE is offered for sale for the first time in its history.
- Specified in a unique Chiffon White colour scheme, it features SE enhancements including extended sills, vented rear wheel arches, and a soft leather interior.
- To be offered at auction at the Porsche Sale, The Wing, Silverstone, on 21st October with an estimate of £180,000 - £220,000.
A Porsche 911 Turbo SE that inspired Judas Priest lead guitarist Glenn Tipton to write platinum-selling album Turbo, and best-selling single Turbo Lover, is to be auctioned by Silverstone Auctions at the Porsche Sale at The Wing, Silverstone, on 21st October.
Collected by Tipton from the Porsche factory while on tour in Europe in 1985, the 930 series 911 Turbo was specified with a unique Chiffon White colour scheme, and came with the special SE enhancements of vented rear wheel arches, sill extensions and soft leather interior trim.
With a 300 bhp turbocharged air-cooled 3.3 litre engine and stunning looks, the 911 was Tipton’s pride and joy for over three decades, but a demanding music career meant that he seldom had time to drive it, and as a result it has covered only 14,100 miles.
“We had a tour of the factory at Stuttgart and I was so impressed with the engineering and how meticulous they were when building cars, and I just had to have one,” recalls Tipton of his 1985 tour. “But I live out in the sticks, and it has to be nice weather to take the Porsche out, so I hardly ever use it. It’s time for it to go to someone who will get some use of it, but it’s going to be very hard to let it go.”
The 911 has been meticulously maintained by Tipton, and in preparation for the sale, the 911 was sent to highly respected specialists Two Plus Two for a full service, new injectors and a fresh MOT in June.
“We feel very privileged to offer this important car for sale for the very first time in its history,” adds Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “Cars with this unique history, single ownership, and known provenance, rarely come to market and this special car is a real opportunity for the enthusiast and collector alike.”
A fine example of an iconic eighties super car, the 911 Turbo SE will be offered for auction with an estimate of £180,000 - £220,000.
