7 minutes and 51.7 seconds is the new record, besting the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S by 8 seconds.

It’s a bittersweet kind of week for Porsche as after claiming the Nürburgring lap record for a regular production car with the 911 GT2 RS, the company headquartered in Stuttgart has now lost the SUV crown. Alfa Romeo is to “blame” as it took the Stelvio Quadrifoglio to the Green Hell and gave it to Fabio Francia to put it through its paces through the many corners of the challenging track. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, he was also responsible for setting the ‘Ring record for a sedan with the Giulia Quadrifoglio in 7 minutes and 32 seconds.

Needless to say, the Stelvio can’t match the performance of its more agile sedan counterpart, but the 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds lap time is still hugely impressive. It’s especially true when you take into account the former top dog, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, needed an extra 8 seconds to complete the same task. It should be mentioned that when Alfa Romeo introduced the Stelvio Q at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year, it estimated the company’s first SUV ever would do a lap in about 7:59, but as it turns out, the 510-horsepower machine is way faster.

The record might not last for a long time considering two supercars disguised as SUVs are on their way. We are talking about the latest-generation Porsche Cayenne in the range-topping Turbo S E-Hybrid specification and the highly anticipated Lamborghini Urus. While the folks from Sant’Agata Bolognese have said they don’t really care about obtaining the SUV ‘Ring title, let’s keep in mind they’ve made a big deal about the Huracan Performante’s Nürburgring run, so we won’t be too surprised if sooner or later they will attempt to claim the SUV title.

There is a good chance Porsche will want to get the title back and it might happen as early as next year after installing the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid’s 671-hp hybrid powertrain into its big SUV.

A Stelvio Quadrifoglio lapped the 12.9-mile Nordschleife (north loop) in a record 7 minutes 51.7 seconds. This new benchmark time is a full eight seconds faster than the previous production SUV record.

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio record was established by Fabio Francia, the same driver who also set the track record for the fastest four-door sedan in the world on the Nürburgring with the Giulia Quadrifoglio in a time of just 7 minutes and 32 seconds.
