Engineers from Williams Advanced Engineering show us how electric vehicles should be made.
Williams Advanced Engineering, the tech-focused spinoff from the Williams F1 team, has revealed its plan to make electric vehicles lighter, safer, and more efficient. The company was formed to bring Formula 1-style technology and knowhow to the automotive and other industries.
The concept car features a number of innovative aspects, including a new battery pack design, cooling systems, and lightweight structures, all of which have been integrated into a single platform that can be adapted for different-sized vehicles.
The one particular aspect that the Williams engineers are keen to point out is the highly automated, near-zero waste process that is being implemented to create fiber-reinforced suspension components on the EV platform, which makes for an up to 40 percent weight reduction over a conventional aluminium wishbone.
Developed by in-house specialists in aerodynamics, electric systems, advanced lightweight structures, and vehicle integration, Williams Advanced Engineering is using the concept platform to show off what it can do and how it can help car makers build better electric vehicles.
Paul McNamara, the company’s technical director, said: "Vehicle efficiency has always been core to Williams. Our thinking around how to create a tightly integrated, lightweight chassis and powertrain package, has the potential to greatly increase the competitiveness of the next generation of electric vehicles. By making EVs more attractive to consumers, we can help accelerate their adoption and the air quality benefits they bring."
