Volkswagen has released a new virtual racing game in order to help promote the 2010 Golf GTI's UK launch scheduled for May 22.

Available at GTIProject.com, the game is built around the Scalextric racing tracks that many of us played with as kids (and as adults). After a rather long promotional video, players are invited to drive a 1:43 scale Golf GTI around a 30ft by 25ft track that is surrounded by more than 200 scale buildings which were built by a team of 60 modelers. Players who post the best times will appear on the leader board and potentially be entered in a drawing for the chance to win a three-month lease on a real Golf GTI.

The new GTI comes equipped with a 2.0-liter TSI engine that produces 210 PS and 280 Nm of torque.  This allows the hot hatch to run from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 149 mph.
