The result of a design collaboration between MINI, trailer maker Airstream and furniture specialist Republic of Fritz Hansen can be seen at a furniture fair in Milan at the end of this month.
A story WCF ran in March depicted a conceptual MINI Cooper S Clubman pulling an Airstream caravan. This is part of a design collaboration with Danish furniture design brand Republic of Fritz Hansen and American caravan maker Airstream.
MINI has always been a lifestyle brand but even more so in recent years after the takeover by BMW. The Clubman version is probably the most extreme example of this with its longer wheelbase and more interior space. Mobile living is the overriding factor in this three-way collaboration with watersports being the extension of that.
The car goes with the theme of water throughout, from the wetsuit effect on the roof, the green trim on the window mouldings, headlights and bonnet, to the purpose-built mounts for water sports kit. Diving gear, oxygen tanks and flippers can all be carried with ease. Even Neoprene, the material used in making diving suits appears on the seats, the dashboard and side panelling.
As for the Airstream trailer itself a few modifications make it the ideal space for beach relaxation. The interior features four Republic of Fritz Hansen-designed chairs around a table which can be used for activities like team snacks. The floor is made from high quality "yacht-deck" wood panel look materials and the wall decoration at the rear wall is courtesy of floral prints and two surfboard halves. A daybed that may be used for tanning is revealed by electrically unfolding one side of the trailer.
The public will be able to see the concept in the metal at its reveal during the INTERNI Design Energies exhibition in Milan. It is part of the annual Salone del Mobile Furniture Show which happens from 22 - 27 April, 2009.
