Extended gameplay footage shows the new NFS title will basically be a playable F&F.

After catching a glimpse of the new Need for Speed earlier this month, developer Ghost Games has released a longer video with actual in-game footage, although there are still many cutscenes. An ode to the Fast and Furious movies with a dash of Burnout, the latest title seems to have an action-oriented story rather than being about pure racing like it was the case with previous games. Where have we seen this before?

An RTR Ford Mustang GT is used to hijack a rare Koenigsegg Regera while obliterating several BMW X6 Ms in the process and smashing a great deal of helpless cars. If you’re a fan of the F&F movies and of NFS games, Payback will be a match made in heaven. Some of the sequences shown in the trailer should be familiar, like the one where the girl jumps on the truck after climbing onto the Mustang’s hood. In the fourth Fast and Furious movie, Letty (played by Michelle Rodriguez) does just about the same.

Beyond the F&F influences, Need for Speed Payback will feature five distinct car classes (race, drift, off-road, drag, and runner) and you’ll be able to find abandoned cars spread all over the map. Customization will be possible, both in terms of giving the vehicles extra performance and making them look more aggressive.

The only thing bigger than the Fast and Furious movie franchise would have to be the number of Need for Speed games and the series is set to expand on November 10 when Payback will be released for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms. The game has already been confirmed for the PlayStation 4 Pro as well as for the newly introduced Xbox One X. A Nintendo Switch version was briefly mentioned during E3, though the chances of actually happening are slim because the console is underpowered compared to the others.

Also coming this year are other big racing game titles, such as the recently revealed Forza Motorsport 7 and Gran Turismo Sport.
