We doubt this is his first rodeo with Ford's new supercar.
When your name is synonymous with racing and fast Fords, it’s a given that you’ll be on the short list to receive a 2017 Ford GT supercar. Whereas the previous Ford GT was “mass produced” with over 4,000 cars built during 2005 and 2006, the current biturbo GT will see just 1,000 copies created over the course of four years. Jack Roush isn’t just on the enviable list of GT owners, he’s among the first to get his hands on one. Specifically, Roush’s GT wears serial number 15.
For those who may be familiar with the name but not the legacy, Jack Roush got his start as a Ford engineer back in the 1960s before moving out to start his own engineering company that, among other things, made go-fast parts. He’s been involved with NHRA drag racing, Trans-Am and IMSA racing, and pretty much everybody knows about his NASCAR team Roush Fenway Racing that he started with driver Mark Martin. He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006, and he’s survived not one but two plane crashes, which put him right up there with Harrison Ford. So yeah, you might say he’s earned his stardom.
His company has also maintained close ties with Ford through the years, which includes performance parts and a complete line of special-edition Roush Mustangs, not to mention both incarnations of the reborn GT. As with the robust V8 of the earlier model, the 3.5-liter V6 in Ford’s newest supercar is not so far removed from the engine found in the F-150 pickup, though with help from Roush engineers it produces a staggering 647 horsepower. Considering the car weighs just over 3,000 pounds, it's no wonder the $450,000 speed slayer still has 6,000 buyers on a waiting list to get one.
We certainly hope Mr. Roush enjoys spending some quality on-road time in his new GT before it’s relegated to static display in his ever-growing collection of amazing rides. But somehow, we suspect he’s already had plenty of seat time in GTs where his name wasn’t on the title.
