SEAT president Erich Schmitt said the Ibiza Sports Tourer should be expected next year. VW Group's Spanish brand said it will be releasing 10 new models in the coming years to provide more choice to customers.
Seat has announced that there is an ST (Sports Tourer) version of the Ibiza coming.
In a speech at the Spanish brand's annual meeting, Seat president Erich Schmitt, President of SEAT said that there would be 10 new models coming soon and that the Ibiza ST was one of them.
Schmitt said the Ibiza ST should be expected next year but there were no other details release about the model. But by ST Seat means Sports Tourer, a wagon, like the recent Renault Megane, Opel Insignia and, of course, Seat's very own Exeo ST.
A roomier Ibiza, in the Audi tradition of the sport wagon, seems like a good idea, which we can only use our imaginations to conjure up since there are no images as of yet available. One should expect Seat to borrow some expertise from its sister VW Group brand on building a proper sports wagon and the model may very well fill a void in the Seat line-up, which has not lived up to the lively/sporty image of the brand VW has tried to forge for its Spanish division. Perhaps that is why the brand is pushing ahead in these tough times with 10 new models.
A good bet is that the Ibiza ST will come with the same VW Group 1.4 liter TFSI, twin-turbocharged engine that produces 180 hp and 250 Nm of torque for the Ibiza Cupra model, or with the 160 hp version of it found in the Golf. The powertrain will also likely feature VW's 7-speed DSG gearbox.
But that's all speculation, which we are fully permitted to do here. We will just have to wait for more from Seat to see how exactly the Ibiza ST model will look and be outfitted.
