It could be a Genesis Coupe replacement, or it could be something new entirely.
Hyundai officially announced the discontinuation of its famed Genesis Coupe just over a year ago. Though that may be a bit of sad news for fans of the relatively affordable sports car, a new promo video suggests that Hyundai hasn’t given up entirely on the idea of a sporty, low-slung two door.
The video, by way of Autoblog, teases a clay model that looks proportionally similar to the outgoing Genesis Coupe. It pairs the coupe's signature liftback styling with a sleek, updated body. The car can be seen at the 1:12 mark, with the on-screen caption reading, "It’s why we make our cars the way we do."
Though it’s unclear exactly what the car in question may be, there are a few potential suspects. The most likely candidate points to a Genesis Coupe successor, previewed by the HND-9 Concept, pictured above. Though gone from the Hyundai lineup, Genesis has already said that it plans to revive the model as a more luxurious touring car by 2020. If and/or when produced, it would share a platform with the upcoming G70 sedan, and could put to use a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6.
But the question remains: why would Hyundai tease a Genesis model in its latest promo video? Even if they are owned by the same company. With that in mind, it could mean that Hyundai may have a plan in place to introduce an Elantra Coupe to rival cars like the Civic, or even revive the discontinued Tiburon… the latter of which seems less likely.
Whatever the case, we’ll just have to wait and see.
