It may or may not be real, but we still get to see a Porsche Panamera on a race track.
The first rule of rideshare is that you never, ever talk about it. The second rule is, if you’re waiting for a Peugeot and a Porsche Panamera Turbo shows up – driven by a guy wearing a Porsche shirt no less – expect the unexpected.
If we’re honest, we have no idea whether or not Porsche tapped real people or actors for this amusing Panamera video, but the takeaway is still hilarious. Even the tough nuts out there with a fussy sense of humor should find this clip moderately enjoyable at the very least. If you have any doubts, jump to 1:23 for the older couple valiantly facing their fear.
At the wheel of this Panamera Turbo is professional racing driver Romain Dumas. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he has a very distinguished list of endurance racing achievements that include four 24 Hours of Nurburgring victories, and two overall wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That last bit is important for the video, as Dumas takes his passengers to the famous French track after their rideshare trip to Paris is interrupted by a traffic jam.
That’s where the real people aspect of this comes into question. Maybe these folks were originally legitimate passengers seeking transport to Paris, maybe not. But you don’t just pull onto the Bugatti Circuit at Le Mans all willy-nilly while a track official goes to “find some helmets.” At the very least, the passengers must’ve been briefed while they were waiting and given an option to bail. Then again, perhaps the blonde in front really was testy after getting tossed into the passenger window. But the old couple in back that was so scared at first? They seem to be having a bit more fun.
Chevrolet, are you paying attention to this? If you want “real people” in your advertisements and not have them be lame, this is how you do it. Slap unsuspecting, every day folks into a car, do crazy things with them, and record it. Yes, it’s a concept that’s been done many times now, and in all likelihood these people are still putting on an act. But you know what? It works.
