Only the headlights really let down the model's safety rating because they have issues illuminating the left side of the road.

The refreshed 2017 Honda CR-V has held onto its Top Safety Pick+ status from the Institute for Highway Safety despite the agency’s more stringent testing guidelines.

The 2017 CR-V scored top marks in all of the IIHS’ crash tests, including the often difficult small overlap evaluation. The agency found no significant risk of injury in any collision that it put the crossover through.

When equipped with the optional Honda Sensing Package, the 2017 CR-V scores the maximum six points for its front crash prevention system, which earns the model a Superior rating. This equipment is standard starting with the EX trim for an opening price of $27,635, versus $24,985 for the base LX grade. 

The 2017 CR-V’s headlights caused the crossover to miss getting perfect scores in every evaluation. The IIHS gave the LED units on the Touring trim an Acceptable rating, one step below the top Good ranking. The agency found that the low beams were inadequate when taking a gradual left turn. Meanwhile, the high beams weren’t good enough at illuminating the left side of the road when going straight or when taking a sharp left corner.

The halogen lights on the EX-L, EX, and LX trims scored a Marginal rating – a further ranking below Acceptable. Neither the low nor the high beams were adequate when turning left.

Under the IIHS’ latest guidelines, a vehicle needs to have Good or Acceptable scores for its headlights to be eligible for the TSP+ designation. It could still be a Top Safety Pick, though, if the headlights aren’t good enough.

In Motor1’s First Drive, Managing Editor Steven Ewing said: “this new model is better to drive, more comfortable to sit in, and offers more onboard technology.” Based on the IIHS’ battery of tests, it’s quite safe, too. Prices for the CUV can be as high as $42,851 if you tick every possible option box, but the range-topping Touring trim offers just about everything a buyer could want for $33,295 with front-wheel drive or $34,595 with all-wheel drive.
