On sale next spring, the 530e will try to deliver the complete package: performance, efficiency, and luxury.

Joining the first-ever M550i xDrive for the 5 Series’ 2018 model year is a thrifty plug-in hybrid derivative as part of BMW’s iPerformance portfolio. It’s going to be the most frugal 5 Series in United States thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline unit working together with an electric motor. The combustion engine will churn 180 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque whereas the electric motor will deliver 95 hp for a combined output of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft.

Update:

That’s going to be enough hybrid punch to enable the 530e iPerformance run to 60 mph in a decent 6.1 seconds and top out at 130 mph (or 87 mph in electric mode), with all power and performance figures being preliminary at this point. BMW is going to sell the frugal midsize sedan exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission fitted with paddle shifters.

BMW is installing the 9.2-kWh battery pack underneath the rear seats in a “space-saving location,” so the extra hardware will not eat into the trunk’s cargo capacity, nor will it have an impact on the flat load floor. Recharging the lithium-ion cells to full capacity is going to take less than seven hours using a regular socket, while with a fast-charging solution the time will be reduced to less than three hours.

BMW USA isn’t saying a word about the 530e’s fuel consumption in hybrid mode or about the electric range, but we do know its European counterpart sips just 2 liters / 100 km and can cover up to 28 miles (45 km) without using a drop of gasoline.

There’s not much to say about the car’s exterior as it looks virtually the same as the other members of 5 Series G30 family, with the obvious exception of the cap mounted on the front-left fender. There are also some “eDrive” badges both inside and out along with blue accents for the instrument cluster, which will also contain hybrid-related info.

Just like the aforementioned M550i xDrive, BMW USA will have the 530e iPerformance on sale in the spring of 2017 and will reveal pricing closer to the plug-in hybrid sedan’s launch.
