Porsche introduced the facelifted Boxster earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show where it brought along the “718” prefix and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Stuttgart-based marque only launched the base model and the S version, but now it’s gearing up for the hotter GTS scheduled to arrive at some point in 2017.
What to expect from the GTS? Well, more of everything. The old one had an extra 15 horsepower (11 kilowatts) and 7 pound-feet (10 Newton-meters) of torque compared to the S model, but this time around there might be a bigger gap between the two now that the cars are using a four-cylinder turbocharged engine instead of a naturally-aspirated flat-six unit. With the 718 Boxster S being rated at 350 hp (257 kW) and 309 lb-ft (420 Nm), expect the GTS to have somewhere in the region of 375 hp (280 kW) and 330 lb-ft (447 Nm).
Aside from the additional oomph, the 718 Boxster GTS will gain a slightly more aggressive body, new wheels, a stiffer suspension setup, and a more powerful exhaust note.
Taking into account the S runs to 62 mph (100 kph) in 4.2 seconds when equipped with the Sport Chrono Package and the PDK transmission, it means the GTS should complete the task in four seconds and max out at a top speed higher than the 177 mph (285 kph) reached by the S model.
Expect to see the 718 Boxster GTS debut alongside the equivalent Cayman coupe at a major auto show next year, quite possibly in March in Geneva or later in September. Further down the line, the range-topping Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 will be updated as well, and purists will be happy to hear that Porsche has already confirmed the two will retain the naturally-aspirated flat-six engine. At the other end of the spectrum, Porsche is preparing to launch in China weaker 250-hp versions of the Boxster and Cayman duo in a bid to boost sales by lowering the starting price.
