The builder has amazing attention to detail.

Another amazing automotive project is now on Lego Ideas, and this proposal for a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon would be perfect for some simulated off-roading through the backyard flowerbed. With 552 supporters as of this writing, the model is still a long way from the 10,000 votes it needs for the Lego Review Board to consider putting the Jeep on store shelves. However, there’s still plenty of time to gain a following with over 400 days to go.

Builder Chiho Kim does a fantastic job of recreating the famous model’s iconic design from Lego. He even includes a seven-slot grille in front and a removable hardtop that reveals a roll bar underneath. According to the builder’s description, “the most difficult part of the construction was to join the hood and the two mudguards.” He spent weeks trying to figure a way to integrate them well. Kim eventually found a solution, but he still wasn’t entirely happy with it. “Better ways of joining these parts together must be sought out for more perfection,” he wrote in the Lego Ideas project summary.

We really only have one incredibly minor problem with his design, and that’s the engine. In the current design, it appears that the powerplant sits transversely, whereas the Wrangler has a longitudinal layout. Given the rest of the build’s quality, this is an easy issue to ignore, though.

Kim built the Wrangler to be in the same scale at Lego’s Volkswagen Beetle and Mini Cooper kits, so the off-roader should look great with them on your bookshelf. He also referenced his own passion for photography by including a little DSLR camera and road cones. A net in the rear of the Rubicon holds them down during hardcore rock crawling.

We wish Kim luck with his Wrangler project. Successful Lego Ideas proposals like the Caterham 620R set show that these models sometimes successfully make it through the process.
