Three transmission choices but just one engine for the newest Jeep.

After showing the car overseas, Jeep now has revealed its newest crossover in the U.S. market. The 2017 Jeep Compass will hit showrooms in the first quarter of 2017 with three transmission choices and four trim levels, and up to 30 miles per gallon.

Though Jeep will sell 17 different Compass powertrains globally, there’s only one engine headed to the U.S. market. The 2.4-liter inline-four ‘Tigershark’ mill produces 180 horsepower (134 kilowatts) and 175 pound-feet (237 Newton-meters) of torque, and though specific numbers aren’t ready, Jeep promises 30 mpg; the engine has a stop-start function to save fuel. On four-wheel-drive variants, the Compass comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while front-wheel-drive models get a six-speed automatic. There will also be a six-speed manual available on the Sport 4x2, Sport 4x4, and Latitude 4x4 models.

As was evident before, the Compass looks like a scaled-down Jeep Grand Cherokee. It’s a handsome, modern look, with signature Jeep cues like a seven-slot front grille and squared-off openings for its plastic-clad fenders. Thanks to its unique front and rear fascias, one-inch ride height increase, and skid plates, the Trailhawk model is claimed to be the most capable off-roader in the compact-crossover segment, and it earns Jeep’s famous Trail Rated designation.

Options include gloss-black roof treatment or an enormous panoramic sunroof. There’s a 7-inch color trip computer ahead of the driver, and depending on trim level, a 5.0-, 7.0-, or 8.4-inch version of the Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system. The system now has multi-touch pinch-to-zoom functionality, plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

Other key capabilities for the 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk include up to 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) of towing capacity, the ability to ford 19 inches (48 centimeters) of water, and a low-range four-wheel-drive system with a 20:1 crawl ratio. The unique bodywork allows for impressive 30-degree approach and 34-degree departure angles, too.

"Clearly Jeep owners value the ability to escape civilization every so often," joked Jeep brand chief Mike Manley.

The Compass will also be offered in Sport, Latitude, and Limited trim level with varying levels of equipment. Wheel choices run from 16 to 19 inches, and high-zoot options include things like self-park assist, LED taillights, remote start, a heated windshield wiper de-icer, leather upholstery, and more. It weighs between 3,184 and 3,633 pounds, depending on configuration. With the rear seats up, there’s 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 59.8 with the back seats folded down. That’s better than the total storage space offered be Jeep’s Renegade (50.8 cubic feet) and Cherokee (54.9).

Though the Jeep Compass will be built in four factories worldwide, models destined for American consumption are set to roll out of a plant in Toluca, Mexico. Stay tuned over the next few months for pricing figures and exact fuel-economy ratings.
