The 2017 GLE43 is bigger, faster, and bolder than the outgoing model.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe, while interesting, may not be everyone's cup of tea. Thankfully, you don’t have to settle solely for the awkward slant-back design. Mercedes let loose its more usable, more handsome AMG GLE43 at the 2016 L.A. Auto Show.
Replacing the dated GLE400, the new GLE43 introduces a more powerful 3.0-liter biturbo V6 that produces 362 horsepower (270 kilowatts) and 384 pound-feet of torque (520 Newton-meters). That’s the same engine you’ll find on the Coupe version. Power is channeled to the wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, and per any good "43" car, the GLE comes with 4Matic all-wheel drive.
From a standstill, the Benz will bolt to 60 mph (96 kmh) in just 5.6 seconds, on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 kmh). Unfortunately, Mercedes won’t be building any 200 mph (321 kmh) SUVs any time soon (no matter how many times we ask).
Slotting just below the top-of-the-range GLE63, the GLE43 features all the amenities one might expect in an AMG car of this caliber. A sportier suspension, upgraded brakes, more direct steering, and of course, throttle mapping. That aggressive makeover translates to the exterior as well.
A noticeably more muscular body sits atop a set of AMG wheels and low-profile tires. It’s design isn’t as dramatic as some of its siblings, but it will turn some heads in the carpool lane nonetheless. Inside follows the same subtle style, introducing sporty-enough seats, and more performance-looking paddle shifters... and not much else.
The new GLE43 will be on display at the L.A. Auto Show before it goes on sale early next year.
