Ford's feisty new EcoSport CUV is ready for its American debut.

Ford has officially tossed its hat into the ring for the largest range of SUVs in the industry. This is the new EcoSport – the smallest SUV in Ford's global lineup and destined, finally, for the North American market. When it reaches the U.S. in early 2018, the EcoSport will be imported from Chennai, India. That makes it the first U.S.-market Ford product to be built in India.

Making its debut at the LA Auto Show this week, the EcoSport introduces an all-new design and range of engine options, building on the versatile Fiesta B2E platform that was first introduced in 2002. The most noticeable changes are in the fascia, which foregoes the gaping lower grille and slim upper grille on previous models in place of a more family-friendly look – the Ford family, that is.

Equipped with the choice of either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive (depending on the trim), the new EcoSport utilizes a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine, or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, both paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive can be had exclusively with the 2.0-liter engine and upper-level SES and Titanium trims.

In the cabin, Ford’s Sync 3 entertainment system sits front and center in an 8-inch screen that juts up from the dash. The new EcoSport also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing for seamless connectivity between smartphones, and an available Sync Connect with FordPass app that allows users to start, lock, and unlock the vehicle using Bluetooth. There's also an available B&O Play sound system with 10 speakers and a claimed 675 watts of power.

All that connectivity is good news, considering the EcoSport also comes equipped with two fast-charging USB ports, a 12-volt power outlet, an available 110-volt outlet positioned behind the center console, and another 12-volt outlet in the rear. As many as 30 stowage pockets, bins, and hooks also line the interior, putting to use nearly every inch of available storage space.

Ford has yet to announce pricing options, but expect it to cost around $20,000 when it goes on sale in early 2018.
