The Audi A3 is more powerful and more efficient than ever thanks to a new 2.0-liter base engine.
Gone is the lowly 1.8-liter turbocharged engine previously found on the Audi A3, and in its place is a more powerful, more efficient 2.0-liter TFSI. The new engine, producing 16 more horsepower (11 kilowatts) and 21 more pound-feet (28 newton-meter) of torque over the outgoing version, will be introduced for the 2017 model year.
Paired to a new seven-speed S Tronic transmission, the 2.0-liter TFSI produces a total of 186 horsepower (138 kilowatts) and 221 pound-feet (299 newton-meters) of torque, able to propel the front-wheel-drive sedan to 60 mph (96 kmh) in just 6.6 seconds. But with new power also comes new efficiency — a return of 29 mpg combined represents an increase of two mpg over the outgoing model.
Along with a new engine, the Audi A3 range will get a few minor adjustments to the exterior, including a new headlight design and updated cues to the fascia. The most noticeable refreshment will be a wider ‘Singleframe’ grille that gives it a more aggressive feel, so says Audi.
The base A3 Premium front-wheel-drive model will now have a starting price of $31,200 for the coupe, and $37,600 for the cabriolet, not including the $950 destination.
Opt for the higher-trim A3, though (Premium Plus and Prestige), and a more powerful 2.0-liter TFSI Quattro presents itself, sending 220 horsepower (164 kilowatts) and 258 pound-feet (newton-meters) of torque to all four wheels through a six-speed S Tronic gearbox.
The Premium Plus represents a healthy $3,250 increase over the base model at $34,450 for the coupe, and $40,850 for the cabriolet. For the top-of-the-range Prestige edition (not including the S3 and RS3), you’ll be staring down the barrel of a $40,150 price tag for the coupe, and $46,550 for the cabriolet. Destination not included.

The A3 sedan with 2.0-liter engine replaces the 1.8-liter engine previously offered on A3 front-wheel drive models. This new 2.0-liter engine offers increased performance and the driving dynamics expected of an Audi, with an increase of 16 hp and 21 lb-ft of torque compared to the previous generation A3 1.8T.
The 2.0T engine is mated to a new seven-speed S tronic® dual clutch transmission with front-wheel drive, which can deliver 186 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds for the sedan, a reduction of 0.6 seconds compared to the previous model. To help increase engine efficiency, the A3’s 2.0T engine utilizes a combustion method with shorter compression and longer expansion phases. The compression ratio was increased to 11.7:1 from 9.6:1, further improving the engine’s efficiency and allowing for greater power and torque delivery.
The A3 Sedan and Cabriolet showcase every aspect of Audi expertise found in the brand’s full-size luxury vehicles, in an affordable premium compact model. The model line offers a host of standard premium features such as leather seating surfaces, panoramic sunroof on the sedan, dual-zone automatic climate control, xenon plus front lighting with LED daytime running headlights and LED taillights.
New for 2017 is a redesigned exterior that includes a new headlight design and updated design cues such as an all-new front fascia with a wider Singleframe® grille, making the A3 appear even sportier and more aggressive on the road.
The A3 Sedan and Cabriolet models are also available with the higher output 2.0 TFSI quattro® all-wheel drive turbocharged four-cylinder engine with six-speed S tronic® dual clutch automatic transmission.
