A 550bhp racing truck from Volkswagen, waiting for a chance to prove itself at 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

In Los Angeles today Volkswagen showcased a purpose-built Red Bull Baja Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck, a race truck that will enter this year's Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, which is in its 41st year. The vehicle qualifies in the SCORE Trophy Truck class and is powered by a 5.5-liter V12 clean diesel engine. Power runs at 550bhp and torque reaches a thumping 625 lbs.-ft. Mind you all that power and twisting force are persuading something that weighs about 2.5 tons.

Featuring a double A-Arm front suspension and a 4-link rear suspension, this off-road menace carries Fox Racing Shocks, Eibach Coils and BFGoodrich Baja KRT 37x13.5x17 special purpose off-road tires. Front suspension allows for 25 inches of wheel travel, while the rear one allows for 30 inches. The car itself measures 213 inches in length, 92 inches of width, an overall vehicle height of 78 inches plus a wheelbase of 125 inches.

Design of the truck was done by Volkswagen Design Center in Santa Monica, California. It's loosely based on the common Volkswagen Touareg, also exhibited at the 2008 LA Auto Show, which has been approved by all 50 States in 3.0-liter V6 TDI form. A range of about 600 miles off a tank is possible on this road-going version, according to EPA results.
