UK buyers now have a wider choice of petrol and diesel engine to choose from.
European Mercedes buyers already have a fairly bewildering range of engines to choose from. For UK buyers, the choice has got even more complicated, as a number of new engines have been added to the latest E-Class Wagon and GLC-Class Coupe.
The AMG E43 Wagon goes head-to-head with Audi’s S6 Avant, sporting a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine producing 401 horsepower (299 kilowatts). Sent to the road via 4MATIC four-wheel-drive, that’s enough to dispatch the 0 to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) sprint in just 4.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
The E43 may grab the attention of us gearheads, but much more relevant are the two new diesel engines. The E200d is powered by a 150 hp (112 kW) version of Mercedes’ brilliant 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel motor, coupled to a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, as all UK E-Class models are. It’s performance won’t set the world on fire, but its low carbon dioxide emissions and 65 miles per (UK) gallon fuel economy will hold big appeal for fleet buyers.
The E350d, meanwhile, gets Merc’s brand-new, 3.0-liter, V6 turbo diesel engine, which churns out 258 hp (192 kW) and still returns nearly 50 mpg. The E-Class Wagon is now also available with a pair of rear-facing jump seats for kids that fold out of the trunk floor.
The 350d and AMG 43 powertrains have also found their way into the GLC Coupe. Despite losing 34 hp (25 kW) over the AMG E43, the AMG GLC43 is just 0.2 seconds slower over the 0 to 62 mph sprint, taking 4.9 seconds. And the GLC350d is only marginally less economical than the equivalent E-Class Wagon.
Incidentally, Mercedes has taken a leaf out of Audi's book by adding the option of 4MATIC 4WD to the best-selling, 194 hp (145 kW) E220d sedan. It costs £1500 more and is less economical than the standard rear-wheel-drive car, but UK increasingly appreciate the security of 4WD.
E220d Wagon prices start at £36,735 ($46,615), while the E350d Wagon starts at £47,255 ($59,964). The AMG E43 Wagon will set you back £58,290 ($73,967). Meanwhile, the GLC350d Coupe costs £47,135 ($59,812), and the AMG GLC43 Coupe is pegged at £50,960 ($64,665). Deliveries of all will start in December.
