It’s a very rare occasion that an automaker manages to surprise everyone with an announcement about a new car, but Ferrari did just that when it revealed the turbo V8-engined GTC4Lusso T, which has made its public debut at the Paris Motor Show.
A heavily reworked version of the four-seat, four-wheel-drive FF shooting brake, the GTC4Lusso was launched earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show with a searing, naturally-aspirated V12 engine under the hood and 4WD. The new GTC4Lusso T slots into the range below that car, switching to a 3.9-liter, twin-turbo V8 and rear-wheel-drive.
Don’t go thinking the smaller engine means the new car has lost its teeth, though. Remember that engine also powers the California T and 488 GTB. In the Lusso, it produces ample outputs of 610 horsepower (448 kilowatts) and 561 pound-feet (760 Newton meters) of torque. A seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox sends the power to the rear wheels.
Ferrari quotes a 0 to 62 miles-per-hour (100 kilometers-per-hour) time of 3.5 seconds, just a tenth slower than the V12 car. Top speed goes beyond 200 mph (320 km/h).
The switch to rear-wheel-drive has shaved 110 pounds (50 kilograms) off the Lusso’s weight, bringing the total down to 3836 lbs (1740 kg) and shifting the weight distribution more towards the rear. Ferrari has recalibrated the four-wheel-steering system and Magnaride adaptive dampers to take advantage; sharper, more nimble handling is promised to be the result.
The arsenal of chassis control systems also include F1-Trac traction control, E-Diff electronic differential, Manettino selector with five modes, and Side Slip Control.
Model-specific tailpipes and 20-inch forged wheels are available, but otherwise there’s little to distinguish the Lusso T from its big brother. The rather handsome exterior is all-but identical, while the interior uses the same 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and “Dual Cockpit” passenger-side information display.
Ferrari has yet to announce when the GTC4Lusso T will go on sale, or what the price will be.
