2019 Aston Martin DB11 AMR First Drive: Rich Get Richer
– Nürburg, Germany
Wait, we’re not driving on the ‘Ring?
In 13 years of driving test cars, I’ll admit that I’ve gotten a little bit spoiled. Jetting off to France or England or Patagonia, sometimes to drive once-in-a-lifetime cars – or at least interesting cars before anyone else has so much as turned a wheel – one tries to keep his expectations in check. But when the email comes through with the words “Aston Martin” and “Nürburgring” in the subject line, even I start to palpitate a bit.
So, just a few days before flying out to have a run at the newest and greatest iteration of Aston’s mind-blowingly beautiful DB11, finding out that I wouldn’t be driving on the Nordschleife was just this side of heartbreaking. (“This side” being the part of my brain that understands being asked to drive a new Aston at all, anywhere, is a privilege, and I should really take a good look in the mirror and ask what sort of dick I might be turning into.) As it turns out, I needn’t have worried.
In fact, while turning laps at the famed road course is undoubtedly Bucket List 101 stuff, it turns out that the countryside around the track is more than worth the ticket to Germany. Especially, and this can’t be overstated, when you happen to be exploring it in this Aston Martin DB11 AMR.
