2015 BMW 7-Series tackles the Nurburgring for the first time

The 2015 BMW 7-Series has been spied undergoing testing on the Nürburgring for the first time.

Dressed in heavy camouflage, the prototype appears to have an evolutionary design with similar proportions to the outgoing model. While there isn't much to see, the car has a prominent grille, an upward sweeping beltline and a dual exhaust system.

Regardless of what it looks like, the redesigned 7-Series is expected to ride on a lightweight platform that uses aluminum, carbon fiber and steel. This could enable the sedan to weigh 204 kg (450 lbs) less than its predecessor.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but previous reports have indicated the model could be offered with a 260 bhp (194 kW) four-cylinder, a 340 bhp (254 kW) six-cylinder and a 460 bhp (343 kW) V8. We can also expect at least one plug-in hybrid variant and, possibly, a new M770i xDrive with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that has approximately 475 bhp (354 kW) and 480 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque.
