According to a recent report, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will be offered with a diesel engine in the United States.

Nothing is official but Automotive News is reporting that three sources have confirmed the automaker will offer the trucks with either a 2.5- or 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. There's no word on US-specifications but the Holden Colorado's 2.5-liter unit produces 150 HP (110 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, while the 2.8-liter unit develops 179 HP (132 kW) and up to 470 Nm (347 lb-ft) of torque.

GM's chief engineer for full- and mid-sized trucks, Jeff Luke, declined to confirm the rumors but hinted diesel engines are "one option we're considering." He added the company is pleased with how the diesel-powered Colorado is selling in international markets.

If everything pans out, the diesel-powered Colorado and Canyon will go on sale in the United States in the fall of 2015.
