BMW's front-wheel drive future is inching closer to reality as our spy photographers have snapped new photos of the 1-Series GT.

Recently previewed by the Active Tourer Concept, the production model is a five-door hatchback which is destined to battle the Mercedes B-Class. While the car is heavily camouflaged, we can see it will feature a prominent grille, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and a dual exhaust system.

The model will ride on the company's UKL platform which will also underpin the next-generation MINI Cooper. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but all-wheel drive could be optional.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but are expected to include a variety of three- and four-cylinder units. Key among them will be the new 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo that is slated to have outputs ranging from 81 HP (60 kW) to 201 HP (148 kW).
