The next generation of the Peugeot 308 has been spied in northern Europe during cold weather testing.

The French compact hatchback will be longer and wider and should get the firm's latest design language seen for the first time on the smaller 208 which went on sale early last year. The new 308 is expected to be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show or next year in March during the Geneva show.

There aren't any confirmed details about the engine lineup, but the next-gen 308 will most likely be offered with an array of economical 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, with outputs varying from 90 (67 kW) hp to 160 hp (119 kW). There will also be a flagship GTi model which should provide 200 hp (149 kW).

The prototype in these spy photos is the 5-door version, but Peugeot is planning an estate, three-door and convertible versions of the new 308.
