Chevrolet El Camino slated for a comeback?

We're eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the 2014 Chevrolet SS, but a new report is indicating it could be joined by an El Camino successor.

While Adelaide Now says the Ute's return is "almost certain," the speculation seems to be solely based on GM's recent renewal of the El Camino trademark. This should be taken with a grain of salt as it's not uncommon for automakers to protect legendary nameplates despite not having plans to use them on a production model anytime soon.

When asked about the possibility, Holden spokesperson Sean Poppitt said "We haven't made a decision on the next-generation Ute or its presence in export markets outside Australia." He then commented "There is the free trade agreement between the US and Australia which means we are not precluded from selling Australian-made light commercial vehicles in the US market."

General Motors had previously announced plans to sell the Holden Ute in the United States as the Pontiac G8 ST. Those plans were eventually axed because it would have been a "low-volume, niche product."
