Volkswagen seven-seat crossover coming to Detroit, Routan could be dropped - report

Volkswagen's head of global design has revealed the company's seven-seat crossover will "most hopefully" debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Speaking with journalists at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Klaus Bischoff said the model's off-road ability will not be as strong as the Touareg but "more than good enough to compete." He also added, "It's an SUV in the European way – in the Volkswagen way."

In related news, Bischoff cast doubt on the Routan's future by saying a replacement isn't on the company's "to-do list." This likely means the minivan will be phased out when the next-generation Dodge Grand Caravan, which currently serves as the basis for the Routan, is introduced in 2014 or 2015.
