2015 Ford F-150 to feature extensive aluminum bodywork - report

To meet stricter fuel economy standards, Ford will reportedly be turning to aluminum to make the 2015 F-150 lighter.

To meet stricter fuel economy standards, the 2015 Ford F-150 will reportedly have aluminum bodywork.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Ford executives have said the change could enable the next-generation model to weigh about 700 pounds (317 kg) less than its predecessor. It remains unclear how extensive the switch will be, but speculation suggests the model could have an aluminum hood, fenders and doors.

The use of aluminum will undoubtedly improve fuel efficiency, but sources say it will come at a cost - a larger sticker price at the dealership. This could have an impact on sales but we should find out more when the truck is introduced in the summer of 2014.
