Cadillac flagship green-lighted for production - report

Cadillac has reportedly approved production of a range-topping flagship.

According to Automotive News, the Mercedes S-Class competitor will be launched in 2015 and ride on the company's rear-wheel drive Omega platform. Styling will likely be influenced by the Ciel concept and a variety of V6 / V8 engines are expected. They will likely be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an optional all-wheel drive system.

In the near term, the company will launch a facelifted SRX this fall. It will tide buyers over until a redesigned model goes on sale in late 2014 or early 2015.

Next year, Cadillac will introduce a redesigned CTS. It will be slightly larger than the current model and feature evolutionary styling. A coupe should debut a year later, but the wagon has reportedly been axed.

2013 will also usher in a new Escalade. It will be based on the company's next-generation pickup truck architecture and likely feature a new, small block V8 engine.

Later that year, Cadillac will launch the ELR coupe. Essentially a rebadged Chevrolet Volt, the ELR boasts sporty styling and an upgraded Voltec powertrain.

In 2014, the company will introduce an ATS-V and an ATS coupe. An ATS wagon is considered unlikely and the convertible variant has reportedly been put on hold.

Lastly in 2015, Cadillac could introduce a large crossover based on an updated Lambda platform. It should be more economical than the Escalade which will make it a good choice for families that don't extreme hauling capabilities.
