2014 BMW X5 spied in a winter wonderland

Dressed in swirly camouflage, the prototype appears to have an evolutionary design with a prominent front fascia, a sloping roofline and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.

Our spies have snapped new pictures of the 2014 BMW X5.

Dressed in swirly camouflage, the prototype appears to have an evolutionary design with a prominent front fascia, a sloping roofline and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. The vehicle is slightly larger than the current model, so we can expect added cargo capacity and more accommodating third row seats.

To battle the bloat, the model will reportedly feature new axles that weigh 330 pounds (150 kg) less than the current ones. This, combined with other weight saving measures, could enable the entry-level X5 to tip the scales at less than 4,000 lbs (1,814 kg).

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but speculation suggests there will be a variety of six- and eight-cylinder units. We can also expect a couple of four-cylinder engines - one petrol and one diesel - that produce approximately 245 PS (180 kW / 242 hp). There's also word of a hybrid variant which could use the ActiveHybrid 5's powertrain which combines a 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) 3.0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with a 56 PS (40 kW / 55 hp) electric motor.
