Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi recently discussed the possibility of a rotary-powered MX-5, but a new report is indicating the 2014 model will feature a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder.

Nothing is official, but AutoCar says the engine will have SkyActiv technologies such as variable cam phasing. There's no word on outputs, but the mill will reportedly be connected to improved automatic and manual transmissions.

Little else is known about the model, but it is slated to ride on the new rear-wheel drive S platform and have a curb weight of approximately 800kg (1,764 lbs). This is a remarkable number, so we can expect lightweight components and a minimalistic interior.

Styling remains a mystery, but the car is expected to be narrower and feature a Kodo design which could take a few cues from the Takeri and Shinari concepts.
