By 2020, the company wants to reduce its harmful emissions by 25 percent.

Jaguar is expanding its Ingenium family of engines with the introduction of new petrol units, which will enter production and will be available from 2017. Specific details are scarce at the moment, but the British manufacturer says they will use an electrohydraulic valvetrain, integrated exhaust manifold, and twin scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearing technology. The new motors will deliver “exceptional performance, efficiency and refinement while meeting the most stringent global emissions regulations.”

Back in 2015, Jaguar launched a 2.0-liter turbodiesel Ingenium engine and the new petrol units share the same basic architecture, based on a 500 cubic centimeters per cylinder displacement. The petrol powertrains are modular and can be used for sedans, coupes, and SUVs with rear-, all-, or four-wheel drive.

“Ingenium has been developed as a modular family of powerful, efficient and refined all-aluminum petrol and diesel engines,” Nick Rogers, Jaguar Land Rover engineering director, says.

“All Ingenium engines deliver benchmark low levels of friction, contributing to inherently good efficiency and refinement.”

In addition, Jaguar has also announced a new eight-speed automatic gearbox with an ultra-wide ratio spread of 20:1, more than double that of a conventional eight-speed automatic. Representing a $39.5-million investment, this new transmission weighs around 44 pounds (20 kilograms) less than existing eight-speed automatics from the brand and could be used in longitudinal rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. The British company claims the Transcend gearbox is up to 10 percent more efficient than other automatics.

“Environmental innovation is at the heart of our strategy to dramatically reduce emissions up to 2020 and beyond, Rogers explains. “With the Ingenium family of powertrains and advanced research projects such as Transcend, future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will emit significantly less CO2. By 2020, new technologies will help us reduce our CO2 emissions by a further 25 percent.”
