BMW has been top-selling luxury carmaker since 2005.

BMW looks set to lose its position as the best-selling luxury carmaker in the world, as a glut of new models propels Mercedes to the top spot.

Mercedes deliveries were boosted 12 percent in the first seven months of 2016, up to 1.17 million units. By contrast, BMW saw growth of only 5.6%, moving around 1.14 million cars during the period.

Mercedes topped the sales charts in the United States as well, though sales actually dropped 1%, down to 191,300 (excluding Sprinter vans). That was, however, well ahead of BMW’s total of 179,213 sales, an 8.4% loss that promoted Lexus to the number two slot.

The hugely popular GLC crossover and all-new E Class sedan are thought to have contributed significantly to Mercedes’ gains. Most of BMW’s less comprehensive range of models are older than their Mercedes counterparts; even the most recent among them, the 7 Series, has failed to usurp its great rival, the Mercedes S Class.

Mercedes is even making more money than BMW, reporting a 10% return on sales - adjusted for ‘special items’ - in the second quarter of the year, while BMW saw a 9.5% return.

Meanwhile, Audi holds firm in third place, recording 1.1 million sales in the year to the end of July, up 5.6% on the same period last year.
