Ford Mustang Boss 302 Patriot Edition

In 2011, Ford Motor Company started work with renowned high performance car builders Steeda Autosports on a one-of-one 2012 Boss 302. Pulled directly from the assembly line and conceived in-house by Ford’s design department, the Patriot Boss 302 would go on to be considered the single most collectible Mustang produced that year.

The idea was to transform a stock Boss 302 into a sister car for an existing, highly restored Calypso Coral 1969 Boss 302 (lot S118.1). Coming during the war in Afghanistan, the two cars would be Ford and Steeda’s contribution to the Mustang Dream Giveaway, an annual raffle that benefits Healing Heroes Network, a charity providing neurological health care to wounded war veterans.

The Patriot Boss 302 does more than just recreate the sought-after Calypso Coral paint of the 1969, which was not offered in 2012. Ford prepared the unique color, graphics and badging, while Steeda’s build included their Tri-Ax shifter; Boss 302-specific lower aluminum trailing arms; lowering sport springs; and bolstered cold air intake. All this is in addition to a 444hp Boss 302 package with optional Recaro seats and 3.73 helical differential; 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels; quad exhaust; manually adjustable suspension; and rear seat delete with interior bracing. Signatures across the strut tower brace of Mustang Design Manager Melvin Betancourt and Mustang Chief Engineer David Pericak combine with both the Calypso Coral and Patriot badging to create a car that is unique, appealing and authentic.

The Mustang Dream Giveaway ran for several months and in August, 2011, a winner from Effingham, Illinois, took delivery of his new cars. But circumstances soon forced the sale of the pair, and they were sold together to the consignor in the winter of 2012.

The two cars have remained together, proving to be immensely popular every time they’re displayed, but one hopes that somehow, with this car built specifically to match the Calypso Coral 1969 Boss 302, they have the chance to remain together. Car and Driver said the 2012 Boss 302 was “the best Mustang ever,” and it’s become a performance icon, only one of which is the Patriot Edition, in Calypso Coral recreated by Ford Motor Company solely for this car.
