Porsche 911 Speedster

When Porsche built the 1989 Speedster, they created an instant classic. Drawing on the heritage of the 356-based original of the '50s, Porsche took the basic 901-series floor pan and built it up by going back to the basics. The second-generation Speedster is entirely faithful to its namesake, meaning that while it is certainly not unsophisticated—not by a long shot—it is definitely concise in executing its mission as a no-frills road machine. The chopped windshield, windows and top are all there, and the back seat was deleted in favor of a simple (and lightweight) storage shelf. The Speedster’s overall weight savings add up to a curb weight of 2,690 pounds, 154 fewer than the standard Cabriolet. For those who appreciate the creature comforts associated with Porsche ownership, the Black 911 Speedster offered here from the Don Davis Collection offers four-way power seats, air conditioning, leather upholstery, and a Porsche sound system, among other features. Then there is the Speedster’s performance, which is more than hinted at by the Turbo-style bodywork comprising flared fenders and wider tires on Fuchs wheels with Black-painted centers. Even better, the Speedster also uses the Turbo’s suspension (with the exception of Bilstein shocks) and its heavy-duty four-piston disc brakes with ventilated and cross-drilled rotors. Beneath the famous sloping tail is Porsche’s air-cooled 3.2L flat-6 engine rated at 214 HP at 5,900 RPM and mated to a short-throw-shifted 5-speed gearbox. The 911 Speedster was a limited-production automobile and this example is documented with the certificate of authenticity from Porsche. Just 2,200 were built, making it twice as exclusive as the original, and only 814 reached North American shores. That’s exclusive, and this example rates at the top of any Porschephile’s list of must-haves thanks to its low 12,627 miles and its spectacular presentation.
