Buick Super Riviera Custom Breathless

Award-winning customizer Rick Dore possesses the innate ability to combine the best design influences of the past with a fresh creative vision, resulting in a totally new and unique automotive statement. With a massive portfolio including concepts for Chrysler, Ford, GM and Hyundai, Dore has established a high-profile presence in the restyling field that is rivaled by few.

“Breathless”, his second project, was based on a 1953 Buick Super Riviera hardtop, at the urging of Dore’s wife Susan. After being completed, Breathless not only took First in Class at the 1995 Oakland Roadster Show, it was also named “World’s Most Beautiful Custom” at its next appearance in Sacramento. In addition, Breathless has graced the cover of Custom Rodder magazine and was detailed in Bo Bertilsson’s book, “Classic Customs and Lead Sleds”, while a scale model was produced in 2006, which is included with the sale of the car.

The heart of any custom car is of course its bodywork, and Breathless includes a removable Carson top, flowing seamlessly into the rear deck. Other highlights include a faired upper grille shell, faired headlamps with billet surrounds, a nosed and filled hood, and a front bumper incorporating Packard “bullets”. Filled portholes, as well as shaved door handles and emblems, complete the car’s incredibly smooth profile.

To the rear, arched quarter panels blend into massaged rear wheel openings. A faired-in 1956 Plymouth rear bumper perfectly complements a 1951 Buick deck lid, hand-built custom taillights and a rolled lower pan. Finished in a custom-blended House of Kolor black purple and lavender candy exterior paint, the overall effect is one of sleek elegance and stunning attention to detail.

The interior features Chevrolet Monte Carlo swivel-type front buckets, hand-made panels, a custom rear seat and a full-length center console as well as white pearl leather upholstery with purple highlights. Breathless also features a Chevrolet Nova front-end assembly and a 350 cubic inch GM crate engine, producing 350 horsepower. The car rolls on a set of chrome smoothies with Coker wide whitewall radials. Other exceptional details include a fully chromed engine compartment and purple lighting underneath the car.

This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in August 2009 at the Shotwell Gustafson Pavilion at Meadow Brook Hall, Rochester, Michigan.
