Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG
Since the late 1990s, the title for world’s fastest sports sedan has been fought largely between BMW’s M5 and the ferocious, AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz E55. The “55” designation has been used for some time by AMG to signify its primary 5.4-liter V8 engine, handmade by specialists in Affalterbach for use in most every available car in Mercedes-Benz’s model range. For larger cars, such as the E-Class sedan, this engine is fitted with an IHI supercharger (hence the “Kompressor” designation) and intercooler, dramatically increasing horsepower and consequently every other performance measurement.
This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in June of 2010 at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California.
469 bhp, 5.4-liter 24-valve IHI supercharged and intercooled V8 engine, five-speed automatic transmission with manual mode and AMG Speedshift programming, Airmatic DC air suspension, AMG high performance disc braking system. Wheelbase: 112.4".
