Two-year restoration process for rare car owned by The King.

A young American soldier named Elvis Presley took delivery of a beautiful BMW 507 in Germany in 1958, eventually bringing the car back home to the U.S. after his military service. But after several different owners and years of neglect, the car was in rough shape when it arrived at the BMW Museum in Munich two years ago. Fast forward to today, and BMW has made good on its promise to restore the car and debut it publicly at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

This particular BMW 507 was first built in 1957 and subsequently displayed at many auto shows around Europe, before eventually being sold to Elvis – then aged 21. After his military service was complete, he brought the car back to the U.S. with him in 1960, but soon thereafter sold the car. The buyer, who lived in Alabama, removed the original BMW powertrain and swapped in a Chevrolet engine. While that brought him plenty of racing success, the move was sacrilege for BMW owners: it required chopping up part of the car’s frame and front suspension mountings. The owner resold the car in 1963; it ended up in the hands of BMW collector Jack Castor, who began researching the car’s history in partnership with BMW journalist Jackie Jouret. The pair soon discovered the car’s important provenance.

Fast forward to 2014, and the car was returned to BMW in Munich. But the car was in rough condition: no engine or transmission, rusty metal, non-original paint, ratty interior, and an aftermarket rear axle instead of the original BMW unit. So the BMW Group Classic team carefully disassembled the 507 and rebuilt it, piece by piece, to its original specification. The leather upholstery was designed based on period photos of the car, new door handles and window winders were 3D printed, and the 3.2-liter V8 engine was rebuilt to original spec. BMW even repainted the car in its original color, Feather White.
