Audi S5 Special Edition

It’s not an uncommon tradition for Audi to option out a special edition model as it retires a generation of cars, though with the S5 the usual special wheels and generous-yet-already-available formula didn’t seem quite enough. This time around, the S5 will hand over V8 coupe status to its big brother the Audi RS 5 when the S-car adopts the 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6. And while performance enthusiasts will likely welcome the change to the more economically tunable forced induction engine, those who prefer that sexy sounding V8 and oodles of from-the-factory torque should take note. The new Audi S5 4.2 Special Edition marks the last and best of breed of the V8-powered S5 coupe, an end-of-cycle upgrade that moves the bar on exclusive kit to a level not seen since the sought-after B7 S4 25quattro.

The brain behind the Audi S5 Special Edition is Barry Hoch, Audi of America’s A4/S4/A5/S5/RS 5 product planner, and when you look over the list of equipment it is obvious that he built the car for enthusiasts… likely even for himself.

To start, the S5 4.2 Special Edition is highly limited. Just 125 examples of the car will be built with choice of either a 6-speed manual transmission of tiptronic automatic. Each of the 125 units will be painted in Daytona Grey, previously a color reserved only for RS models or special build cars from Audi Exclusive. 19-inch 5-spoke Rotor design wheels round off the exterior appearance.

Inside, Mr. Hoch put up the call to quattro GmbH and was not disappointed. Bi-color Polar Silver and Black S5 sport seats are standard and accented by silver contrast stitching on the seats, armrests, shifter and steering wheel. Floor mats feature a silver leather border while aluminum Audi Exclusive badges are fittingly mounted on the door panels. For trim, Hoch pulled from the RS 5 partsbin and went for the same wider weave carbon fiber beltline trim found in that car. Another piece gleaned from the RS 5, and one we’re guessing enthusiasts will welcome, is the piano black instrument cluster surround that most A5 and S5 enthusiasts covet.
